I acquired and published a small stable of my own authors including Beverley Kendall, Annabel Abbs, Claire Frost and Oti Mabuse.I created and managed the #DigitalOriginals publishing programme and #OneDay open submission project, which launched the careers of Sunday Times bestselling and award-winning writers including Heidi Swain, Jennifer Bibby, Holly Hepburn, Jackie Fraser and Julie Haworth.I worked with the RNA as industry spokesperson for the #RespectRomFic movement aiming to increase the profile of romantic novelists in the UK, and am co-founder and co-director of the #LoveStoriesEtc romance literary festival that returns to Manchester Central Library for a third year in July 2026.I volunteer at my local Community Library in London as founder of the monthly #HCLBooksEtc bookswap bookclub, resident Book Doctor, and host of the HUSH: Silent Reading Social events, and am passionate about, and committed to, connecting authors to readers in transformative ways.

TESTIMONIALS'SJ is inspiring, passionate about books and reading, masterful in her powers of organisation and her attention to detail. An award-winning champion of romantic and women’s fiction, she’s a brilliant communicator, one of publishing’s heroes. I’m so grateful for all that she’s done for my books.’ RACHEL HORE, author'I worked with SJ for eighteen glorious years and never stopped being in awe of her as a professional, and also as a person. I have never met anyone quite so passionate in the job and so accomplished. She is someone who thinks in the box, around the box and outside the box and I don’t think there is anything she couldn’t do when she puts her hand to it. Her organisational skills, her devotion to duty, she grafts like a workhorse on steroids and she achieves. And she cares about her authors and her peers, that has always been evident. Working with her has been a joy especially in my genre which she has championed and pushed and elevated like no other I can think of. This might seem like high praise, but it’s still not praise enough - I can’t do her justice. All I will say is that anyone who has SJ in their corner will be all the richer for it.' MILLY JOHNSON, author'SJ was my first point of contact in the publishing industry and instilled in me the belief that my aspirations were achievable. More than that, she became instrumental in supporting me while we made each and every one of them happen. A decade of working with a true industry champion, an innovator with drive, determination, a finger on the pulse and total commitment to making the impossible happen has rubbed off on me and my career is all the richer for it. Simply put, SJ is a powerhouse in the publishing industry and anyone fortunate enough to work with her will be blessed.' HEIDI SWAIN, author'I have always considered SJ as the real power and charisma behind Simon & Schuster. The nickname attributed to her was their ‘secret weapon’, and I completely agree with that. She is a force of nature. Everything she does is fired by passion, enthusiasm, creativity and innovation. She thinks outside of the box, and every idea she comes up with is followed through with real drive and energy. I was very lucky to have her ‘on my team’ for 14 years while I was published by Simon & Schuster. She became not only a colleague but a friend too. Everyone was infected by her wonderful sense of humour, cheerfulness, dynamism and positive, can-do and will-do attitude. She’s a ray of sunshine. I’d leap at the opportunity to work with her again!' SANTA MONTEFIORE, author'SJ is a total breath of fresh air in the world of publishing - approachable, supportive, passionate and fun, she's a hotbed of ideas and ALWAYS knows how to make a manuscript ten times better. SJ has always championed my writing, and the romantic fiction genre in general, and has supported me throughout my writing journey. With SJ as my editor, my debut novel went on to win the Romantic Novelists' Association's Katie Fforde Debut Romantic Novel award in 2023 and my second was shortlisted for the Popular Romantic Fiction award for 2025. She's a powerhouse, known and respected industry-wide for her energy and inspiration. Twenty years of watching her work has only increased my admiration. She never wastes anybody's time; all her advice and decisions are thought-through, solid gold ideas. She is unfailingly frank and honest, while keeping an eye on the feelings of others. And how does she pack an extra few hours into each day? SJ outpaces AI when it comes to planning, and she is quick to spot any flaws in a book pitch, and then just as quick at suggesting a fix.
